Precursor messenger RNAs, or heteronuclear RNAs (hnRNAs) are products of gene transcription found in the cell's nucleus. Precursor mRNAs contain bases complementary to those of the template DNA strand, including both exons and introns.

Following pre-mRNA processing, which includes capping, pre-mRNA splicing, alternative splicing, and polyadenylation, the mature mRNA is transported through nuclear pores into the cytoplasm.
